World Day for Animals in Laboratories
Today, we observe World Day for Animals in Laboratories—a day dedicated to acknowledging the millions of animals subjected to testing and research worldwide. Established in 1979, this day serves as a global call to end the suffering of animals in laboratories and promote the adoption of advanced, non-animal scientific methods.
This year, NAVS is championing the Safeguard Pets, Animals, and Research Ethics (SPARE) Act (H.R. 1802), a pivotal piece of federal legislation aimed at transforming research practices and ensuring the welfare of animals. The SPARE Act seeks to:
- Prohibit the use of animals in federally funded research, with certain exceptions.
- Establish the Federal Research Modernization Fund to transition to non-animal research methods and support the validation of these models.
- Mandate post-research adoption programs for animals no longer used in experiments, ensuring they have a chance at life after the lab.
- Require annual audits of research facilities to ensure compliance with these new standards.
By supporting the SPARE Act, we can take significant strides toward ending animal suffering in laboratories and advancing ethical, human-relevant research methodologies.
This World Day for Animals in Laboratories, let’s turn awareness into action. Tell your representative to support the SPARE Act and put an end to cruel, ineffective animal experiments.
Together, we can create a future where scientific progress does not come at the expense of animal welfare.
