Privacy Policy

Last Updated: June 2026

1.Introduction

The National Anti-Vivisection Society (“NAVS,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is committed to protecting the privacy of visitors to our website located at navs.org (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, with whom we share it, and your rights regarding that information.

This policy also discloses our use of third-party tracking, advertising, and analytics technologies, including tools that enable interest-based advertising (also known as online behavioral advertising or “OBA”). By accessing or using our Site, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with its terms, please do not use our Site.

2. Information We Collect

2.1  Information You Provide Directly

We collect personally identifying information only when you voluntarily provide it to us, such as when you:

  • Make a donation through our Site
  • Sign up for our email newsletter or mailing list
  • Submit a contact form or send us an email
  • Create an account or update your profile
  • Take action through our advocacy center

This information may include your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and payment information (for donations). Providing such information is strictly voluntary.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

When you visit our Site, we and our third-party service providers automatically collect certain technical information, including:

  • Your Internet Protocol (IP) address
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Referring website or URL
  • Pages visited on our Site and time spent on each page
  • Date and time of your visit
  • Clickstream data and navigation patterns

2.3 Information Collected Through Tracking Technologies

We use cookies, pixels, web beacons, tags, and similar tracking technologies to collect information about your use of our Site. Some of these technologies are deployed by us directly and some by third-party partners. These are described in detail in Section 3 below.

3. Tracking Technologies and Third-Party Tools

Our Site uses the following third-party tracking and advertising technologies. By using our Site after viewing our cookie notice banner, you consent to the use of these technologies as described below. If you do not consent to the use of tracking technologies described in this policy, please discontinue use of our Site.

3.1 Google Tag Manager

We use Google Tag Manager (GTM), a tag management system provided by Google LLC. GTM allows us to deploy and manage tracking scripts and pixels on our Site without directly editing site code. GTM itself does not collect personal data, but it loads the tools described below that may do so. Google Tag Manager is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy available at policies.google.com/privacy.

3.2 Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC, to understand how visitors interact with our Site. Google Analytics collects information such as:

  • Pages you view and links you click
  • Time spent on pages
  • Your general geographic location (country or city level)
  • Browser and device type
  • Referring source (how you arrived at our Site)

This information is collected via cookies and similar technologies and is transmitted to Google’s servers, which may be located in the United States or other countries. We have enabled IP anonymization in Google Analytics so that your IP address is truncated before storage. We do not use Google Analytics to collect personally identifying information, and we have configured our account to prohibit data sharing for advertising personalization.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Google’s privacy practices are described at policies.google.com/privacy.

3.3 Feathr (Multichannel Marketing and Advertising)

We use Feathr, a digital marketing and advertising platform provided by Feathr, Inc., to help us reach and engage our supporters across multiple digital channels. Feathr enables us to run targeted digital advertising campaigns, retargeting ads, and email campaigns, and to measure their effectiveness.

What Data Feathr Collects

Feathr’s technology collects Non-Personally Identifiable Information (Non-PII), which may include:

  • IP address (host address)
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Date and time of ad requests or site visits
  • Pages viewed and navigation behavior
  • Referring URL
  • Inferred demographic or interest data (such as age range, gender, interests) derived from browsing behavior or provided by third-party data partners
  • Mobile device identifiers (such as Apple IDFA or Android Advertising ID) if you access our Site on a mobile device

Feathr assigns a unique anonymous identifier (typically associated with a browser cookie or device ID) to recognize your browser or device across visits and across different websites where Feathr’s technology is deployed. This identifier is not linked to your name, email address, or other directly identifying information unless you or we specifically provide that link (for example, if we share a hashed email address for audience matching purposes).

Interest-Based Advertising (IBA) / Online Behavioral Advertising (OBA)

Feathr’s platform supports interest-based advertising, meaning that ads may be tailored to you based on your browsing history, inferred interests, and other behavioral data. For example, if you visit a page on our Site about a particular NAVS campaign, you may later see ads related to that campaign on other websites you visit. Feathr may also use cross-device inference (for example, linking a common IP address seen across different devices) to show you ads across your devices.

Opting Out of Feathr Advertising

You can opt out of Feathr’s interest-based advertising and data collection in several ways:

  • AdChoices Icon: Look for the blue AdChoices icon on ads served by Feathr and click it to opt out.
  • Network Advertising Initiative (NAI): Visit networkadvertising.org/choices/ to opt out of participating ad networks including Feathr.
  • Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA): Visit aboutads.info to opt out of participating companies.
  • Feathr Privacy Preferences Portal: Visit privacy.feathr.co to manage your preferences directly with Feathr.
  • Browser Cookies: Block or delete cookies through your browser settings to prevent Feathr from recognizing your browser across visits.
  • Global Privacy Control (GPC): Feathr honors GPC signals. If your browser is configured to send a GPC signal, Feathr will process this as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information under applicable law.
  • Browser Settings: You may configure your browser to block or delete cookies, which will limit Feathr’s ability to recognize your browser across visits.

Please note that opting out of interest-based advertising does not mean you will stop seeing NAVS ads entirely; you may still see non-personalized ads. Opt-out settings are browser- and device-specific; if you use multiple browsers or devices, you will need to opt out on each one.

Feathr retains Non-PII for up to 24 months. For more information about Feathr’s privacy practices, visit feathr.co/privacy-policy or contact Feathr at privacy@feathr.co.

3.4 Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. We use the following types of cookies:

  • Strictly Necessary Cookies: Required for the Site to function. They enable core features such as security and accessibility. These cannot be disabled.
  • Analytics Cookies: Used to understand how visitors use our Site (e.g., Google Analytics cookies). These collect aggregated, anonymized information.
  • Advertising and Targeting Cookies: Used to support interest-based advertising through Feathr, including retargeting and audience building. These track browsing behavior across websites.
  • Preference Cookies: Allow the Site to remember your choices to provide a more personalized experience.

You can control cookies through your browser settings, which allow you to block or delete cookies. Note that disabling cookies may limit the functionality of our Site. Our Site does not currently provide an in-browser cookie preference center; your primary method of controlling tracking technologies is through your browser settings or the third-party opt-out tools described in this policy.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To process donations and send donation receipts
  • To respond to your questions, comments, or requests
  • To send you newsletters, action alerts, and other communications about our programs (with your consent)
  • To run digital advertising campaigns, including retargeted ads, through Feathr’s platform
  • To analyze Site traffic and campaign performance to improve our outreach and fundraising effectiveness
  • To build and manage supporter audiences for targeted digital advertising
  • To comply with legal obligations
  • To detect and prevent fraud or other unlawful activity

5. How We Share Your Information

5.1 Third-Party Service Providers

We share information with third-party vendors and service providers who perform services on our behalf, including:

  • Google LLC (analytics and tag management, as described in Section 3)
  • Feathr, Inc. (multichannel marketing and interest-based advertising, as described in Section 3)
  • Payment processors (for donation processing; we do not store credit card information on our servers)
  • Email service providers (for sending newsletters and communications)

These providers are authorized to use your information only as necessary to provide services to us and are obligated to protect your information consistent with their own privacy policies and applicable law.

5.2 Audience Matching

When we use Feathr to run advertising campaigns, we may provide Feathr with hashed (encrypted) versions of email addresses or other identifiers from our supporter database for the purpose of matching our supporters to Feathr’s anonymous advertising audiences. This is done to ensure our outreach reaches people already familiar with our mission and to suppress ads for existing donors. Feathr uses these hashed identifiers only for matching purposes and does not use them to re-identify individuals.

5.3 Nonprofit Mailing List Exchanges

NAVS participates in postal mailing list exchanges and may, on occasion, share your postal mailing address via trade, rental, or purchase with other nonprofit organizations whose missions we feel complement ours. We do not share your email address with outside organizations for their marketing purposes. To opt out of postal list exchanges, contact us at 800-888-NAVS (6287) or navs@navs.org.

5.4 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, court order, or governmental authority, or when we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.

6. Your Rights and Choices

6.1 Opt-Out of Communications

All NAVS emails include an unsubscribe link allowing you to opt out of future email communications of that type. To be removed from all NAVS communications (postal or email), contact us at 800-888-NAVS (6287) or navs@navs.org.

6.2 Opt-Out of Interest-Based Advertising

You may opt out of interest-based advertising served through Feathr using the methods described in Section 3.3 above, including the NAI opt-out page, the DAA opt-out page, the Feathr Privacy Preferences Portal, or our cookie consent banner.

6.3 California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), including the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and share
  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to certain exceptions
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

Our use of Feathr for interest-based advertising may constitute “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. You may opt out of this sharing by using the Feathr Privacy Preferences Portal at privacy.feathr.co, by clicking the AdChoices icon on our ads, or by enabling Global Privacy Control in your browser. To exercise other California privacy rights, contact us at navs@navs.org or 800-888-NAVS (6287).

6.4 Browser-Based Cookie Controls

Our Site does not currently offer an in-browser cookie preference center. To limit tracking, you may adjust your browser settings to block or delete cookies, or use the third-party opt-out tools described in Section 3 for Google Analytics and Feathr. You may also contact us at navs@navs.org with questions about our tracking practices.

7. Data Security

The NAVS.org website uses industry-standard security measures, including Secure Socket Layer (SSL/TLS) encryption, to protect information transmitted through our Site. We do not retain credit card information on our servers. However, no transmission over the Internet or electronic storage method is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Specific retention periods for third-party tools include:

  • Google Analytics: Analytics data is retained for 26 months per Google’s default settings, after which it is automatically deleted.
  • Feathr: Non-PII collected through Feathr’s technology is retained for up to 24 months. After that period, data is stored only in aggregate form for up to three years, and any PII is destroyed.

9. Children's Privacy

Our Site is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Feathr’s products and services are likewise intended for audiences aged 18 and over. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at navs@navs.org so we can delete it.

10. Third-Party Links

Our Site may contain links to third-party websites. This Privacy Policy does not apply to any third-party website linked from navs.org. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit, as we have no control over and assume no responsibility for their content, privacy practices, or policies.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We will indicate the date of the most recent update at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
