In a groundbreaking decision, the Oregon Health and Science University Board has voted to authorize negotiations with the National Institutes of Health to explore transitioning the Oregon National Primate Research Center away from invasive primate research.

The resolution, passed unanimously on Monday, opens the door to potentially transforming the facility into a primate sanctuary, offering hope for thousands of nonhuman primates currently housed at the center.

This historic vote follows an outpouring of public support, with NAVS supporters submitting nearly 700 comments urging the Board to approve the measure. The decision represents a significant step forward in the movement to end invasive primate research and provide humane sanctuary for these animals.

“This is a momentous day for animal protection,” said NAVS Director of Advocacy and Policy Meredith Blanchard. “The Board’s decision demonstrates that institutions can evolve and embrace more ethical approaches to research and animal care. We are deeply grateful to our supporters who took action and made their voices heard. Your advocacy made this possible.”

The next phase will involve detailed negotiations with NIH to determine the feasibility and implementation of the transition. NAVS will continue to monitor the process and advocate for the best possible outcome for the primates.
