For the first time since Gallup began polling Americans about the morality of medical testing on animals in 2001, support for the practice has dropped to a record low—only 47% now say it is morally acceptable.
NAVS has been tracking Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs survey for over two decades, and we continue to see a clear shift in public attitudes away from animal experimentation.
This year, 47% of Americans say that medical testing on animals is morally acceptable, while an equal 47% say it is morally wrong. We’ve seen this 50/50 divide before—as in 2023, when 48% of Americans said medical testing on animals was morally acceptable and 48% said it was morally wrong. This year’s results, however, mark the lowest level of support for medical testing on animals since the poll began.
These changing attitudes reflect growing awareness about the ethical concerns surrounding animal experimentation—and the importance of advancing humane, human-relevant replacements.
