Our Impact in Rescues, Shelters, and Sanctuaries
Our mission is to provide vital assistance to sanctuaries, shelters, and rescues to rehabilitate and rehome eligible animals formerly used in research or facing other emergency needs or provide lifetime care when necessary. The Animal Sanctuary Assistance Program (ASAP) is giving animals the compassion and care that they deserve.

NAVS helps waystation chimps find safe new homes
After the 2019 closure of Wildlife Waystation, 400+ animals—over 40 chimpanzees included—needed new homes. NAVS ASAP supported NAPSA’s “Chimpanzees in Need” and issued $95K+ in grants to sanctuaries now caring for these former research chimps.

Primarily Primates
Primarily Primates
Primarily Primates, located in San Antonio, TX, was one of the sanctuaries to take in chimpanzees from the Wildlife Waystation in California when it abruptly closed in 2019, offering them a permanent home. The sanctuary houses, protects, and rehabilitates various primate species, many coming from the pet trade and biomedical research facilities. We issued a generous grant to help them with the general, ongoing care of the chimpanzees they took in from the Wildlife Waystation. We are happy to report that the chimpanzees continue to flourish in their new home thanks to your generous support.
Oklahoma Primate Sanctuary (OPS)
Oklahoma Primate Sanctuary (OPS)
Oklahoma Primate Sanctuary (OPS) provides compassionate, lifetime care for non-human primates retired from research, rehomed from the pet trade, or retired from display. They focus on providing a high-quality level of care for all their residents with access to natural environments, a healthy and diverse diet, regular psychological enrichment, and professional medical care. Thanks to your support, we were able to help them with the cost to complete an enclosure for two Japanese macaques that were part of a major rescue from a roadside zoo in Ohio. Now, they will be able to live in safety and comfort, making an enormous difference in their quality of life going forward.
Chimp Haven
Chimp Haven
Chimp Haven, in Louisiana, is home to more than 300 chimps formerly used in biomedical research. They are dedicated to providing and promoting the best care of sanctuary chimpanzees, giving their residents the chance to experience many of the joys they would have in the wild. Due to your support, we have been able to aid Chimp Haven many times through the years in their critical work. This year, we issued a grant to continue our commitment to the ongoing care of the chimpanzees Chimp Haven took in when the Wildlife Waystation abruptly closed in 2019. Furthermore, during the extreme summer weather, we were able to offer a generous grant to assist them with purchasing and installing a high-capacity ice machine as quickly as possible to help keep their residents hydrated and cool in the extreme Louisiana heat. Ice is one of the chimps’ favorite treats and thanks to your support they now have all the ice they have been dreaming of thanks to you!
One Tail at a Time
One Tail at a Time
NAVS was able to lend assistance within our local community when we provided a grant to One Tail at a Time, a rescue group in Chicago. One Tail at a Time, formed in 2008, rescues animals from overcrowded shelters and works to find them forever homes. They prioritize vulnerable populations of animals for rescue and support, including senior dogs, sick dogs, pit bulls and neonate kittens. Their mission is to end pet homelessness by providing support and resources to pet owners in need and making pet ownership an accessible experience for all. One Tail at a Time took in fifteen beagles that were released from a local medical research laboratory. Due to your generous support, we were able to help in covering the cost of the initial medical care for the beagles, which included spay/neuter procedures, vaccines, prevention medicine and microchips.
