NAVS Animal Sanctuary Assistance Program

Helping Animals Heal. Supporting Those Who Care for Them.
Amberwood Sanctuary

Every day, animals are rescued from laboratories, cruelty cases, neglect, and natural disasters. But rescue is just the beginning. These animals need safe homes, specialized medical care, and ongoing support to recover and thrive. And the sanctuaries that step up to provide this care often face immense, unexpected challenges—without the resources to meet them.

That’s why NAVS created the Animal Sanctuary Assistance Program (ASAP)—to offer immediate, compassionate aid when it’s needed most. Whether it’s an emergency medical procedure, repairs after a storm, or an influx of animals needing care, our grants help sanctuaries respond with urgency and dignity.

Why We Act Fast

For animals in crisis, time is critical. And for the caregivers on the front lines, every moment—and every dollar—counts. Our program exists because:

  • Emergencies can’t wait. From wildfires to cruelty seizures, situations can escalate quickly. Rapid-response support can mean the difference between life and death.
  • Healing takes more than shelter. Former research animals and those from traumatic backgrounds need enrichment, rehabilitation, and love—not just survival.
  • Sanctuaries are heroes. These organizations play a vital role in creating a more compassionate world, but are often overlooked and underfunded.

Who We Support

NAVS provides grant funding to organizations that go above and beyond for animals, including:

  • Sanctuaries caring for animals retired from labs or educational use
  • Rescues impacted by disasters needing urgent help to recover and rebuild
  • Shelters responding to cruelty, hoarding, or neglect cases
  • Organizations offering species-appropriate, lifelong care for animals with no other options

These groups do extraordinary work—often quietly, behind the scenes—and we’re honored to stand with them.

What Your Support Makes Possible

Thanks to our supporters, NAVS has helped sanctuaries across the country:

  • Provide critical medical care for animals rescued from research
  • Rebuild barns and enclosures damaged by storms or fires
  • Deliver vaccines, spay/neuter services, and emergency surgeries
  • Welcome animals who need safety, patience, and a place to call home

Each grant tells a story of second chances—for animals, and for the people who refuse to give up on them.

A Bridge Between Rescue and Reform

NAVS is fighting every day for a future where animals are no longer used in science. But until that future arrives, we will do everything in our power to support those already affected. The ASAP program is one way we honor that commitment: providing immediate help to animals in need while continuing our work for long-term, systemic change.

If You’re a Caregiver—We’re Here for You

If your organization is facing a critical need or responding to an emergency, we invite you to apply for assistance. We understand the pressures you face—and we’re here to help you carry the weight.
