At NAVS, we believe the future of science is both effective and ethical. Since 2002, the Humane Science Award has recognized and rewarded high school students who are proving just that—through groundbreaking, animal-free research showcased at the world’s largest pre-college science competition, the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
NAVS is proud to be the only animal advocacy organization invited to present an award at ISEF. Each year, we honor student projects that reflect scientific excellence while advancing humane, non-animal methods. It’s our way of encouraging the next generation of researchers to pursue discovery without causing harm.
What the Award Honors
The NAVS Humane Science Award celebrates students whose work:
- Demonstrates innovation and rigorous scientific methodology
- Avoids the use of animals in testing or experimentation
- Advances alternatives that are ethical, effective, and forward-thinking
These young researchers are selected from more than 1,300 projects by NAVS science and policy experts. Finalists are interviewed on-site at ISEF, and up to five winners are chosen annually, each receiving a $3,000 prize.
Why It Matters
These students are more than competitors—they are pioneers in a movement toward smarter, more compassionate science. By uplifting their voices and ideas, NAVS helps shape a future where scientific progress no longer comes at the expense of animal lives.
“It is always inspiring to meet young scientists who are not only pushing the boundaries of innovation but also doing so in ways that uphold the highest ethical standards,” said Dr. Lauren Stein, NAVS Director of Science and Research Programs. “Their projects show us what’s possible when compassion and curiosity work together to shape the future of science.”
Beyond the Award
In addition to presenting the Humane Science Award, NAVS:
- Monitors the use of animals across all ISEF projects to identify trends and opportunities for reform
- Advocates for rule changes that better protect animals in student research
- Engages with students through ISEF’s Education Outreach Day to introduce humane science tools and dissection alternatives
A Legacy of Compassionate Curiosity
For over two decades, NAVS has helped guide young scientists toward a more humane future. The Humane Science Award continues to serve as a beacon for what science can and should be—a field driven by discovery, integrity, and respect for all living beings.
