On April 22, NAVS welcomed supporters, scientists, advocates, and curious minds from across the country for Warm Hearts, Wet Noses, a virtual conversation exploring the ethics of animal research and the future of science.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us.

Conversations like this are only possible because of a community willing to engage with complex questions, listen to different perspectives, and consider what a more humane future for science could look like.

A Conversation Rooted in Curiosity and Reflection

Throughout the event, our storytellers — Lauren Stein, PhD; Madeline Krasno; and Melanie D.G. Kaplan — shared insights shaped by their professional expertise and personal experiences.

Together, they explored questions at the heart of NAVS’ mission:

  • How can science continue to advance while reducing reliance on animals?
  • What role do human-relevant research methods play in shaping the future?
  • How can open, thoughtful dialogue lead to better outcomes for both people and animals?

The discussion was grounded not in debate, but in curiosity.

As Lauren Stein shared, creating space for people to ask questions without judgment allows for more honest and productive conversations. That spirit was reflected in the thoughtful engagement from attendees throughout the event.

The Power of Storytelling in Science

One of the most meaningful aspects of Warm Hearts, Wet Noses was the role of storytelling.

Madeline Krasno spoke to the importance of lived experience in shaping how we think about research and ethics. Melanie D.G. Kaplan highlighted how storytelling can bring complex scientific and ethical issues into clearer focus.

These perspectives remind us that science is not only about data and outcomes. It is also about people, values, and the choices we make as a society.

Looking Ahead

The questions raised during Warm Hearts, Wet Noses do not end with the event.

They are part of an ongoing conversation about how science can continue to evolve in ways that are both effective and humane.

At NAVS, we remain committed to advancing human-relevant research, supporting the next generation of scientists, and creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue.
